Fragment of an autograph letter : Salcombe, to John Ruskin, [1889] May 16.

Expressing his joy at hearing from him and knowing he is getting better; talking of his own frailties and saying "I am anxious that I shall be fit for nothing any more--Providence arranges however that the sense of uselessness shall be less unbearable than one expected by slackening the strings, so that they will not vibrate."

Distinguished historian James Anthony Froude was born at Dartington rectory, Devon, in 1818. He was the brother of William Froude (1810-1879), engineer and naval architect, and of Richard Hurrell Froude (1803-1836), divine. The younger Froude was educated at Westminster School from 1830, and then privately in the village of Merton.
